The Veil

Project type

Competition

Date

January 2026

Location

Yakushima, Japan

Set within the rainforests of Yakushima, The Vaporous Veil is conceived
as an architecture shaped by weather and seasonality. The project
embraces seasonal change, such as rain, mist, light, wind, and humidity,
as a primary design tool. Architectural elements and material choices are
carefully curated to register these natural rhythms, allowing the building
to continuously transform in response to its environment.
The spatial organization is designed to according shifting weather and
climate pattern, enabling occupants to fully experience the passage of
time and season. Inward-facing views toward Shinto-inspired elemental
gardens draw the forest into the heart of the building, creating moments
where nature permeates the architecture.
Wellness underpins the project’s design thinking. The architecture is
orchestrated to heal both body and mind through carefully sequenced
spaces, controlled views, and the choreography of light and shadow.
Steam from the Onsens blur boundaries between interior and exterior,
presence and disappearance. As steam rises to meet Yakushima’s
low-hanging clouds, the building’s edges dissolve into mist, reinforcing
a sense of impermanence. A continuous, draped roofline responds to
seasonal shifts, dipping to shield interiors from the harsh southern sun,
lifting to invite soft, indirect light, and facilitating natural cross-ventilation
driven by sea breezes.
